Led by an 18-point performance by Hunter Sallis, Wake Forest took down Michigan 72-70 in Greensboro on Sunday. The Wolverines jumped out to a big early lead, but the Demon Deacons chipped away, and grabbed the lead with a 10-0 run in the second half. Tre'Von Spillers had a big game for the Deacs as well, with 16 points on just seven shots. Michigan has yet to find its best rotations; perhaps we see more of Sam Walters in the next games.
Even on days when Xaivian Lee goes 4-17 from the field and Caden Pierce is 3-8, Princeton can win tough games on the road. The Tigers got 18 points on six triples from Blake Peters, along with 25 points from breakout sophomore Dalen Davis to erase a seven-point deficit against Northeastern late in the second half. Then, freshman Malik Abdullahi made the key play, intercepting the Northeastern inbound pass to end the game.
Drake held Stephen F. Austin to 0.84 points per possession in Ben McCollum's first game as a Division I head coach against a Division I opponent. NWMSU transfer Mitch Mascari led the way with 26 points.
Russell Turner's UC Irvine team is having a big start to the season. After a dominant win over Loyola Marymount on Friday, the Anteaters traveled 2000 miles to Cedar Falls, IA, and defeated Northern Iowa comfortably, 80-60. Six UCI players scored in double figures, with 7-foot-1 Bent Leuchten scoring 18.
Purdue received bad news on center Daniel Jacobsen, who started the Boilers' first two games of the season. Matt Painter told reporters that the 7 foot 4 freshman would likely miss the remainder of the campaign with a broken tibia.
